Movie Review: Frozen

Last night, I was looking for a food thriller to watch. It had been a few days since I had taken a look at what was available on Netflix, so I decided to take a look.

One of the most recently streaming thrillers on Netflix is the 2010 thriller Frozen.

Frozen was written and directed by Adam Green, stars Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell, and Kevin Zegers, and chronicles three friends on a snowboard trip. Through a series of circumstances, they become stranded on a chairlift, high above the mountain surface after the ski resort closes. They are then forced to make the choice between freezing to death by staying in the chairlift or peril from the attempt at getting down from such an extreme height.

This film is a gripping psychological thriller. In some ways, its similar to Open Water, in that there is no human adversary (with the exception of the characters battling their own psyches.)  It is not gory, although there is a bit of blood. Essentially, it's a true human versus nature survival story. While watching this movie, you really start thinking, "what would I do in this situation?"

The scenarios that the friends must go through are disturbing to ponder. You may yourself squirming while observing the adversity that they are up against to survive. The human mind often functions ineffectively when it is faced with potentially tragic outcomes.

The acting is fairly good, and a good job is done at portraying the emotional turmoil that the characters are going through. The rustic and mountainous locations are shot very nicely with very nice picture quality.

If you're looking for a movie that builds tension well, and will have you on the edge of your seat, Frozen is for you. It isn't an excellent film, but it succeeds at pulling the viewer into the perilous situation that the main character face.

I enjoyed the film, but as I mentioned above, it is nothing novel or groundbreaking. There are a few continuity errors that I easily noticed. My recommendation is to go ahead and give this film a try. You may enjoy it.

My Rating: 3.5 out of 5 Stars

Incredibly Dumb Products For Sale - Volume 1

Every once in a while, I marvel at how society as a whole has absolutely lost its way. One of the ways I keenly observe this trend is by finding products that truly are incredibly stupid. The mind boggling thing is, people actually buy these items.

A few of the five items I will be highlighting below are high in price, and my guess is, incredibly low in functionality. Consider this the first volume of my presentation of products you absolutely do not need.

Here's a few of my new favorites I discovered in the handy catalog of usefulness that I found in the airline seat back in front of me... the picture captions link to the actual products.

Indoor Dog Restroom
For only $99.95, you can get this genuine grass carpet on a piece of plastic. Too lazy to let your dog outside to relieve themselves? Why not them soil a carpet? Sounds totally logical to me! Need a replacement piece of grass carpet because you are too lazy to clean it? Why not just throw it away and replace it! It will only cost you $49.95. What a bargain!

iRestore Hair Laser
Described as a "new revolutionary device developed so you can take control of your thinning hair." This is a cheap find for only $499. You only need to pay 500 bucks and you too can look this stylish. The funny thing is, the guy they have modeling this thing has a full head of thick hair. Imagine showing this marvel off to your guys at the next football game. I want one simply because it looks so bad.

Pet Wheel-Away
How much will this handy little pull-behind set you back? Only $119.95! Granted I could buy a plastic foldup crate with a handle at Staples for less than $20 but hey... only the best for my pet? America has gone insane with all of the costumes, carpeted bed steps, and other absurd pet products on the market. Simply amazing...

Motorized Grill Brush
Grills can get messy. I understand that. Somehow, someone decided that they were so lazy that they needed a rotating motorized brush to scrape their grill for them. Hey, it even has a handy light so you can see what you are flipping in the dark. How many people do you know that grill food in the dark? Not many I gather! This gem of a find is only $19.99.

Sling Couture Face Mask
Ladies, want to look stylish at the club and still prevent getting the swine flu? Not into catching a cold or maybe a stomach bug but still want to go out and mingle with your friends? Why not pick yourself up a Sling Couture Face Mask! There are several fashionable fabric patterns available for both men and women. Guys, you'll be a hit at your next tee time with your palm tree fabric face mask! For only $9.95, this item is clearly a steal.

I find the products I mention above absurd. That's just my personal opinion and I mean no disrespect to those that may find them useful. Do you see these items as useful? If so, I'd love to hear from you in the comments below.

Will ISP Caps And Charges Conquer Netflix?

I love Netflix. other than DVR technology, no single service has changed how I consume video content. The capability to view movies and television shows on demand on many devices for one low monthly price is extremely useful and cost-effective.

In the last couple of years, Netflix has made a major push towards having its platform available on multiple devices including televisions, game systems, set-top boxes, and mobile phones. Along with inroads from other services such as Hulu, this effort has increased the popularity of streaming video content over the internet.

Netflix has consistently adding movies and television series to its streaming service. The only complaint I have is that there are many movies currently released on DVD that are not yet present. I realize that the entertainment industry is very strict with their release windows and that someday this issue may be resolved. I have found myself watching a lot of quality films that I hadn't heard of. Foreign thrillers are one of my new favorite film genres. There are a lot of great documentaries as well that I have watched.

Due to the nature of internet video streaming, consumers are generating much more demand on the connections of their Internet Service Providers (ISP's.) Due to this increase in traffic, there has been a lot of chatter about ISP's enforcing capacity ceilings on the amount of data consumers can use each month. There has also been discussion about implementing structures that charge consumers per gigabyte of usage. Potentially, those that utilize services like Netflix streaming could see higher internet bills than those that do not use the service.

In a letter (PDF) that Netflix distributed on January 26, 2011 to its shareholders along with its latest financial report, they claim that an obstacle to the success of their company is the potential "move by wires ISP's to shift consumers to pay-per-gigabyte models instead of the current unlimited up-to-a-large-cap approach." Netflix asserts that they hope that ISP's do not take that route, and will continue to promote the continuation of the unlimited-up-to-a-large-cap model. They further assert that wired ISP's costs to deliver one hour of viewing over their network costs them less than a penny, and that price is falling. This clearly says that the ISP's motive for pricing with a per-gigabyte model is economically unnecessary.

Personally, I don't want my ISP to charge me more than they already do. Leave my ability to enjoy Netflix alone!

What do you think about ISP's going to a per-gigabyte pricing model? Do you think it's fair? Do the ISP's make enough money as it is?  Are you a Netflix customer? Please leave your comments below! I'd love to hear from you.

Movie Review: The Other Guys

When The Other Guys hit the theaters, I thought it looked pretty funny. I have liked most of what Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg have done in their film careers thus far. The film also boasts a laundry list of great stars: Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, as well as the attractive Eva Mendes.

My like or dislike for a movie directly corresponds to whether or not it keeps my interest enough to keep me from falling asleep. I started watching this movie at around 9:30 pm last night, definitely not late for me. I would say I was asleep by 10:30 pm. Not too promising. I finished watching the movie this morning, and here are my observations:

It seems like with all the star power in this film, there was a lot of potential for hilarity to ensue. This was not the case. Although the film did have several funny moments, and many catchphrases (pimps don't cry) and on-liners that may be memorable, the film fell flat in its delivery. The dialog seemed forced. Not a good trait for a comedy. It seemed very much like the actors were trying so hard to make it funny. You can almost see it. When delivering lines, you could actually tell that what you were hearing was meant to be funny. For the most part, the humor did not register.

The film focuses on the antics of two disgraced New York City cops Allen Gamble (Ferrell) and Terry Hoitz (Wahlberg) that have been funneled into jobs as paper pushers at their local precinct. The two characters hate each other, and are forced to look past their differences when they take on a high-profile investigation as partners.

The film was directed by Adam McKay, who prior to film directing was known primarily for his comedy writing for several Saturday Night Live sketches, as well as for creating several comedy shorts on the website Funny Or Die. He also wrote and directed a  pair of Will Ferrell's previous films: Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, both of which I thought were pretty funny.

This movie wasn't horrible. If I had to sum it up, I would say it was a mediocre letdown. It could have been much better. My favorite part of the film is the characters that Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson play, and they are only in the first 30 minutes or so of the movie.

My recommendation is, when it hits Netflix streaming or cable, go ahead and give it a watch. I would recommend saving your rental and purchasing dollars for better movies.

My Rating: 2.5 out of 5 Stars

Movie Review: True Grit (2010)

There has been a lot of hype about the newest version of the film True Grit from Joel and Ethan Coen, and since I had seen the 1969 original version starring the Western icon John Wayne, I needed to view it and see if the hype is justified.

In the 1960's, Western's were shot well visually, and there was some good acting on many occasions. John Wayne had a way of portraying his characters that many filmgoers were endeared to. It was also common in those times to have terrible actors in those films as supporting cast. Although there was some solid acting in the original True Grit, there was some less than stellar acting. The acting of country singer Glen Campbell... not terrible, but not good either.

The fact that the Coen brothers wrote the screenplay and directed this film was another reason I was so interested in this film. They are known for quirky films such as Fargo, No Country For Old Men, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and The Big Lebowski, all of which I really liked.

For those of you not familiar with the basic premise of the film, here it is in a nutshell. Don't worry, no spoilers here!

Following the murder of her father by Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), 14-year-old stubborn farm girl Mattie Ross (played by relative newcomer Hailee Steinfeld in her feature-film debut) sets out to capture the killer. She enlists the services of a drunken, hardened, and tough U.S. Marshal, a man with "true grit," Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn, meticulously portrayed by film veteran Jeff Bridges. Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn, whose drunken and ungracious character do nothing to reaffirm her faith in him. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of her father's murderer. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon), who is looking for the same man for different reasons.

The film is beautifully shot, and has some of the best cinematography I have seen in a while. The scenery, costumes, and dialog are spot on. It is obvious that great care was taken to ensure authenticity. There was never a time that I felt any lack of realism.

The acting is terrific. Newcomer Steinfeld shows incredible maturity as an actress when compared to the relative newness of her career portfolio. The talk about Jeff Bridges potentially taking home an Oscar for his portrayal of Cogburn is not unmerited. He portrays the drunken character in a way that in my opinion is much more convincing than the portrayal of Cogburn John Wayne delivered in the original.

Matt Damon and Josh Brolin deliver well to round out the major supporting cast. This is a bit of a different role for Damon, and he fits in nicely. Although only in the film for a few minutes, Brolin is fascinating to watch on screen.

I highly recommend this movie. I wouldn't say I was a huge fan of the original, but I thought it was good. The 2010 version from the Coen brothers is so good it is almost perfect. Clocking in at 110 minutes, I think it could have stood to be a bit longer, and it could have spent a bit more time developing these fascinating characters.

Duke Nukem Forever - Arriving At Last!

The gaming industry is abuzz this morning with news of the release date announcement of Duke Nukem Forever. Gamers have been waiting well over a decade for the sequel to the revered PC game Duke Nukem 3D.

It has been a running gag in the gaming world on whether or not Duke Nukem Forever was actually under development for many years. The property switched development studios, was declared dead, was resurrected countless times, and now has apparently been finished and now has an official release date of May 3, 2011. The title will be available on the PC, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3 platforms. Watch the trailer below!

Publisher 2K Games and developer Gearbox software teamed up to finally finish the project and make this game a reality. The sequel was originally announced by developer 3D Realms on April 28, 1997, and was intended to be released no later than mid-1998. The project saw several lengthy stalls, and was reported to be scrapped and restarted many times using different game engines. In 2009, original developer 3D Realms laid off the games internal development team.

The game was re-announced at the Penny Arcade Expo on September 3, 2010 by Gearbox Software. Gearbox announced that they had purchased the Duke Nukem intellectual property from 3D Realms and that 2K Games now held the exclusive long-term publishing rights to the game.

Here we are 13 years later, and gamers will finally get to see a next-gen Duke game and revel in the phrase, "Come get some" once again! The most recent reports state that the game development is nearly finished, and only minor polishing needs to occur before the games release on May 3, 2011.

Were you a fan of the original Duke Nukem 3D game? Are you eagerly awaiting the ability to play Duke Nukem Forever?

Google Voice Now Allows Porting Your Own Number - (Update - Option is now gone)

Google Voice is a terrific product. Up until now, the main caveat has been that you needed to select a number they provided for you to use with their service. That obstacle is now gone.

As of today, Google Voice now allows you to port your own mobile number to use as your Google Voice number. Now you can give your number out and manipulate it in the myriad of ways that are available through Google Voice. Your messages can now be transcribed using the service, (and yes I know the transcriptions aren't always the best.)

There are a few important facts to consider:
  • You must first check to see if your number can be ported. This can easily be checked on your Google Voice page. Under your Voice Settings, you should now see an option next to your Google Voice number that says Change / Port. Once you click that, you will be asked if you want a new Google Voice number, or if you want to use your existing mobile number instead. You then enter your mobile number and select Check. If your number can be ported, you will see this screen:
  • As you can see in the screen above, there is a $20 fee associated with the number port.
  • Additionally, it has been reported by Engadget that your existing phone contract will be terminated when you port your number to Google voice. They show a screen shot showing the text: "Your mobile phone service plan will be terminated when you port your number to Google Voice and your carrier may charge you an early termination fee." I do not see this when I check my number. I am simply notified that I will need to pay $20. I am an iPhone 4 user on AT&T.
  • By terminating your contract, you will potentially rack up some heavy penalty fees from your cell phone carrier.
    • I believe this is due to the fact that to receive voice calls, you will need a "new" contract from a carrier for a number that Google Voice can send calls to. This is somewhat confusing right now, so I will need to do some further research.
This is no doubt exciting news. Although I have not yet ported my mobile number to Google Voice, I will stay tuned to see how this works for people and how it affects contracts, call flow, and functionality.

I love the feature set that Google Voice offers, but I do not want to breach my contract and be pinned with large early termination fees. I also am interested to see how the functionality works for people that have ported their mobile numbers.

Will you be porting your mobile number to Google Voice? What functionalities will you gain by porting your number?

Update:
The option to port your mobile number has been removed from Google Voice from now. Google has mentioned that they are still testing the feature. Stay tuned... it's bound to resurface soon.

Customer Service - Walgreens Gets It Right

Customer service is a loaded word. Quite often, businesses treat their customers with a total lack of service whatsoever. In a post a while back called: Customer Service Is Closed... Literally, I spoke about how I felt at the lack of service at a local Wal-Mart.

Today, I am writing to tell you of a recent experience that offers a perfect example of how customer service should be.

Recently, my son went to the doctor with a respiratory issue. Nothing serious, just some congestion that was making it difficult to breath. After seeing the doctor, my wife headed to Walgreens to have my son's prescription filled. Typically, my wife will drop off the prescription in the afternoon, and I will pick it up on the way home from work.

On the way home, I stopped by the Walgreens drive-thru pickup to get the prescription. They had no filled prescription for my son, or anyone else in the family. This seemed odd to me. After a couple of minutes of searching for it, they found it in the basket of unfilled prescriptions. It had been dropped off at 12:30 pm, and it was now around 7:00 pm. Plenty of time to have it filled.

I did not complain. The pharmacist technician apologized for the oversight and asked if it would be okay for me to wait a few minutes. I agreed, and about 5 minutes later, the technician came back with the prescription.

She sent the prescription out the drive-thru tray and once again apologized for my inconvenience. I asked her how much I owed, and she replied: "There is no charge today sir due to our oversight and your inconvenience. Granted it would have only cost me $10 in copay, but still, I was impressed that they did that.

In my experiences with other pharmacies, I have come away with a much poorer impression of their quality of customer service. I used to go to CVS, but due to the fact that their technicians seemed inefficient and rude (at least at my location,) I switched to Walgreens when they opened across the street.

It is experiences like I have mentioned above that make a strong impression on me as to who can earn and keep my business. At this point, unless I have an absolutely horrible experience there in the future, Walgreens will have me as a customer for life.

What examples of exceptional customer experience have you experienced? Has some company treated you so well, that you will go no place else for particular products or items?

GTD Tools And Techniques

Over the past few weeks, I have been diving deeper into the using the "Getting Things Done" or GTD methodology for becoming more productive and organized. This is the first in an ongoing series of articles in which I discuss how I am implementing the methods described in the book Getting Things Done by David Allen.

David Allen's book recommends performing a daily "mind dump," which is essentially the process of writing each task or thing that you have on your mind on its own single sheet of paper. It's a great idea to get tasks and ideas out of your head and into a place where you trust you can retrieve them.

The problem for me is, I am trying to avoid using paper as much as possible. For me, paper seems to pile up endlessly, no matter how much I try to keep things in their proper place. I began the search for an electronic solution to this problem. Ideally, the solution needed to be computer-based and able to sync with my mobile devices for access and input while away from the computer.

I've been using two applications religiously for the last couple of weeks: Evernote and OmniFocus. I will describe these applications and how I am using them below.

Evernote

Evernote is an application that is available for Mac, Windows, and many mobile phones that allows you to capture ideas, photos, web clippings and much more. You can easily organize and index the things that you enter into the application. Another nice feature is that you can add tags to notes to aid in searching and grouping certain things.

One of the features I most like about Evernote is its simplicity. As far as keeping track of notes and information that you may want to reference in many places, it is phenomenal. I use evernote on my Mac, iPhone, and iPad. The program syncs itself to the cloud and keeps all information current across all of my devices.

I frequently use Evernote to store things like configurations and settings needed for computers I may be working on, websites that I hear about and would like to review at some point, and sermon notes at my church. The application is easy to use, and the basic version is absolutely free. There is a premium version available for $5 a month, or $45 a year that offers enhanced security, bigger upload capacity, support for more file types, pdf searching, faster image recognition, and no ads.

By all means, check out Evernote!

OmniFocus

OmniFocus is my favorite productivity tool. It was co-developed my Merlin Mann of the GTD and productivity oriented website 43folders.com, this application works incredibly well. A friend recommended I try this tool and see how it affected my productivity.

I must say, that I have been more productive since using OmniFocus. It allows you to capture, process, and organize your to-do and project items, as well as sync it across multiple devices. The only caveat I have seen is that you need to purchase the app for mobile devices even if you have purchased the computer-based version.

The feature I really love about OmniFocus is that you can organize items into different "contexts," that allows you to focus on performing certain work tasks at appropriate times. For instance, you can choose the "Phone" context and see all of the phone-based items you need to complete while you have time or access to make phone calls.

This program, from what I have seen, most closely follows the methodology in the Getting Things Done book, and was designed specifically to adhere to the processes described in the book.

The program is available for Mac, iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. I have the program for my Mac, iPhone, and iPad. The application is reasonably priced at $79.95 for Mac, $19.99 for iPhone, and $39.99 for iPad.

This is by far my go-to application for implementing GTD. If you have a Mac or Apple iOS device, give OmniFocus a try!

Do you use Evernote or OmniFocus? If so, I'd love to hear how you are using it. If you do not use these tools, do you think they could help you keep track of the chaos of organizing things?

Movie Review: Assault On Precinct 13

I am a big fan of simple, low-budget, gritty films. "Assault On Precinct 13" is as gritty as they get.

The movie chronicles the story of a nearly abandoned police station that is held under siege by a heavily-armed street gang. The station is being relocated to another part of town, and there are a few individuals that remain there while it is in transition.

The focal arc of the story presents a situation where police must team up with convicts headed for death row or die. The story is not complex, but the result is impressive.

This 1976 film from horror/suspense auteur John Carpenter features several trademark elements such as prodding electronic musical score and simple no-frills camera shots. Everyone knows the theme from Carpenter's later film "Halloween." If you compare the score for this film, and "Halloween," can hear how his electronic score complexities evolved and improved since this film.

Carpenter has a talent for using simple and realistic imagery to convey feelings of despair and tension. Never one to use gimmicky gotchas, we can see how he uses sound and stark visuals to achieve the tone he seeks for the film. The film succeeds in building suspense and tension. There are no fancy special effects or extreme shocking moments. Instead, Carpenter uses silence to ratchet up the intensity.

Is it a good film, yes. A great film, no. The dialog is very simplistic and unnatural sounding. However, the imagery and sound make up for the lack of great dialog.

If you are a fan of classis crime thrillers, give this movie a watch. "Assault On Precinct 13" is also a must for any John Carpenter fan.

My Rating: 3.5 out of 5 Stars

Have you seen "Assault On Precinct 13?" What about the 2005 remake starring Laurence Fishburne and Ethan Hawke? Please share your thoughts and opinions in a comment.
